COVID-19: Spanish government announces shock plan when cases rise to 999 – Current affairs

The head of government called for “unity, serenity and stability” in the face of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Pedro Sánchez, who chaired the new coronavirus monitoring commission this morning, demanded that all citizens strictly follow the indications, “as they are already doing”, and that they listen carefully to the health recommendations prescribed in the autonomous communities.

“This cause does not distinguish ideas or colors,” said Sanchez, who defended the government’s management in the face of this health crisis, emphasizing that Spain has a robust health system with “excellent” professionals.

The Spanish Ministry of Health today confirmed 999 cases of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in the country, most of which are located in the Community of Madrid (469) and in the Basque Country (149).

The Spanish ministry announced these figures shortly after the press conference held by the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, in which he reported the record of 904 confirmed cases and 16 deaths.

Simón, however, specified that the data is changing according to the information provided by the autonomous communities.

In addition to Madrid and the Basque Country, these are the communities with the largest number of people infected by the new coronavirus: La Rioja (81), Catalonia (75), Andalusia (54), Valencian Community (37), Castile-La Mancha (26 ), Castile and Leon (23) and the Canary Islands (22).

As well as in Aragon (13), Cantabria (12), Balearic Islands (11), Asturias (7), Extremadura (7), Galicia (6), Murcia (4) and Navarra (3).
