New Zealand earthquake warns Pacific coastal countries tsunami

yunhap news-The earthquake in New Zealand on the morning of the 5th (local time) triggered a tsunami warning in Pacific coastal countries.

The New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) issued a warning at 8:30 am, saying that a tsunami could hit the coastal area due to a magnitude 8.1 earthquake that occurred in the waters near the Kermadek Islands, 800 km northeast of New Zealand’s North Island.

NEMA advised residents of the North Island coast to immediately move to the highlands or inside the island, and emphasized that they should follow the evacuation recommendations before the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) quarantine guidelines.

NEMA predicts that the first tsunami will reach the North Island at 9:49 am on this day.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) warned that a tsunami could hit American Samoa and Hawaii due to a strong earthquake in New Zealand.

PTWC also cautioned that a 1 to 3 meter high tsunami could occur on the coasts of Latin American countries such as Mexico, Peru, Chile, Nicaragua, Colombia and Ecuador, as well as South Pacific island countries such as French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, and Niue.

There were three earthquakes on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island and in the Kermadek Islands, with a magnitude of more than 7 this morning.
