The Minister of Health, Jorge López, invited the population to go to vaccination centers to receive the corresponding doses of the vaccine against the virus.

“We ask the population to go to vaccination sites because it is the only way to prevent people from ending up in a hospital bed or even an intensive care bed,” he noted.

Likewise, he invited parents to sign the authorization that allows their children between the ages of 5 and 11 to be vaccinated against covid-19, in order to reduce the risk of contagion of the virus.

Weeks ago, the executive director of public health surveillance of the Minsa National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), César Munayco, warned that the population made up of young people and adults between the ages of 25 and 40 is what suffers the greatest number of covid-19 infections during the fourth wave of the pandemic in Peru.

He explained that one of the accusations of this increase in infections responds to the fact that this age group is the one who carries out more activities such as going to work, studying or attending parties or social gatherings, so they are more exposed to the covid -19 virus 19.

“According to recent studies, those who get sick and spread the most (from covid-19) are young people and adults between the ages of 25 and 40 because they have greater visibility when they go out for work, study or attend meetings or parties carrying the virus at home, “the expert told Andina Al Día.

Recent studies by the National Institute of Health (INS) have revealed that the increase in covid-19 infections in recent weeks is due to the entry into Peru of the new underlines BA.4 and BA.5 of the omicron variant, as well as the sub-lineage centaur, more contagious than those that gave rise to the third wave.

In this regard, Roger Araujo, infectious disease specialist at INS, pointed out that these sub-variants are not only transmitted faster, but are also more resistant to vaccines.

“It is important to emphasize that the virus does not remain static, but changes over time and accumulates what we call mutations, that is, changes in its genetic material,” he explained in the Andina al Día program.

Who can receive the fourth dose?

As of September 10, the Ministry of Health has decided to expand the age group that receives the fourth dose of the covid-19 vaccine, currently reaching those over 18 years of age.

Minsa’s head of vaccinations, María Elena Martínez, said the fourth dose vaccines match the Moderna or Pfizer laboratories, according to the protocol devised by the industry. “Both are safe and of high quality,” she said.

Those who go to vaccination centers in search of the fourth dose must have allowed five months to elapse from the administration of the third dose; otherwise, it will not proceed.

However, Minsa has predicted that, from July 27, adults over the age of 60 will be able to receive the fourth dose of the covid-19 vaccine 4 months after the third dose.

According to Minsa, five months after the third dose, the antibodies against covid-19 begin to decrease; therefore, the fourth dose helps to increase the defenses and avoid severe forms of said infection.
