Covid-19. Increase in deaths: shocking testimonials from healthcare professionals

Could the lifting of containment, the restart of economic activities and the slackening of the population be the main causes of the worrying evolution of the epidemic in Morocco? The answer was given during a webinar organized by the Moroccan Society of Medical Sciences (SMSM), in collaboration with other partners, reports the daily. al mass in its edition of the weekend of August 15 and 16.

And to specify that if the Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taled, imputes the responsibility to citizens who do not strictly respect the recommendations of the competent authorities, experts make another diagnosis, pointing out the failures.

Indeed, the main cause would be the dysfunction of early detection and follow-up of contact persons. This is why, say these experts, the increase in the number of deaths is mainly explained by the delay recorded in the detection and tracing of contacts.

For a contact case, the time between the identification of the person, the nasal swab and the result of the screening is greater than or equal to seven days. Result of this circuit: approximately 23% of critical cases die just after their arrival at the hospital emergency departments. These cases are only admitted after the aggravation of their situation. Which makes it difficult for any treatment to save their life. And no less than 85% of patients admitted to intensive care die.

The same observation was made by Abdelkrim Meziane Bellafkih, head of department in the epidemiology department at the Ministry of Health. “It is inconceivable to wait four days to be tested and to wait four more days to know its result”, he lamented.

For his part, Professor El Houssein Baro, head of the anesthesia and resuscitation department at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca, specified that 20% of people admitted to intensive care did not suffer from any chronic disease and had no other factor of aggravation. This means that no one is safe from this virus.

Even more serious, underlines Professor Baro, no less than 85% of patients admitted to intensive care die. A rate that appeals in more than one way, deplores Professor Baro. In fact, the death toll has dropped from 11 to an average of 24 deaths per day. This means, adds the head of the resuscitation anesthesia department at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca, that infected people arrive in a desperate state, specifying that 23% of cases die just after their arrival at the hospital.

For his part, Afif Moulay Said, president of the Moroccan Society of Medical Sciences (SMSM), called “to do as many tests as possible in order to know the cases reached early enough and to be able to take care of them before they reach a critical level ”. These concerns were shared by the wali of the wilaya of Casablanca-Settat, Said Ahmidouch. In his intervention during this webinar, he revealed that the number of Covid-19 cases has increased from 100 to 400 cases per day in Casablanca. This blew up the occupancy rate of hospitals.

The wali also pointed out that this increase in the numbers, in particular deaths, would be caused by “the increasingly late arrival of patients, in a relatively serious condition, sometimes desperate, sometimes directly in intensive care”. To deal with this situation, the wali Ahmidouch underlined the need to reorient the screening strategy so that the contact cases are detected as quickly as possible and go more towards the groups at risk.
