A request from the Attorney General is approved. It could now be uncomfortable for Brazil’s most powerful man – because of serious allegations by an ex-minister.
The Brazilian Supreme Court has approved the opening of proceedings against President Jair Bolsonaro on suspicion of political interference with the federal police. This was an application by the Attorney General last Friday, as evidenced by a Supreme Court statement on Monday evening (local time). Former Brazilian Justice Minister Sergio Moro had previously made serious allegations to Bolsonaro and resigned from his post on Friday.
Moro had said that after Bolsonaro fired the federal chief, a close confidant of Moro, he saw no way of preserving the independence of the federal police. Moro is one of the best-known corruption investigators in the country. Bolsonaro nominated attorney André de Almeida Mendonça to succeed Moros and Alexandre Ramagem, who is a friend of the Bolsonaro family, as the new head of the federal police. This emerged from a publication in the “Diário Oficial”, a kind of official gazette, on Tuesday.
The federal police had investigated on behalf of the Supreme Court for a gang that spread false news against the Supreme Court. Investigations were also underway on MPs suspected of supporting anti-democratic acts and calling for military intervention. As the Brazilian television reported, the investigation could burden two sons of Bolsonaro, Carlos – City Councilor of Rio de Janeiro – and Eduardo – MP in Brasília. The Supreme Court ruled that the investigators involved in the cases should investigate them further.
