‘Cough screens’ in buses and trams: hopefully will result in fewer fare dodgers

The measures will be announced today. Pedro Peters, of umbrella organization OVNL, already talks about it in De Telegraaf.

“Since the corona crisis, there has been an average of about twenty percent fare dodgers, because the front door remains closed to protect the driver. Normally that is one to two percent.

The TNO report, which has been consulted by De Telegraaf, states that cough screens help to prevent the transmission of the virus. “We recommend these. They must be disinfected regularly to prevent indirect transmission of the virus by touching the screen”, TNO researcher Jan Souman writes.

Good ventilation

Bus drivers will also open all doors at every stop from now on. Good ventilation seems to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. “The chance of exposure to the virus is thus even smaller, in addition to the already mandatory face masks,” says Peters.

According to the TNO report, the simultaneous opening of front and back doors in combination with cough screens leads to ‘a stronger reduction of aerosol levels’. Aerosols are tiny droplets that can potentially spread the virus as well.

“It is therefore advisable to open all vehicle doors briefly at every stop. It is also better that the first row of seats behind the driver will remain taped,” Souman explains.

At the beginning of next month, the first buses and trams with screens will hit the road. The operation should be completed by October.
