Around 6,000 people are stuck on a cruise ship in Civitavecchia, Italy. A Chinese couple on board are suspected of being infected with the corona virus.

It was supposed to be a tour of the western Mediterranean, but now passengers are not allowed to leave the “Costa Smeralda”. The reason: A tourist from the Chinese Macao Special Administrative Region had a fever and breathing problems.

WDue to the suspicion of the new corona virus on board, around 7,000 people are stuck on a cruise ship off Italy. The health authorities of the Italian port city of Civitavecchia north of Rome said they sent a team of doctors on board in the morning after being informed about a Chinese passenger with a fever. Samples were taken from the wife and husband, and test results are expected later this afternoon.

The shipping company Costa Crociere confirmed that the approximately 6000 passengers and 1000 crew members may not leave the “Costa Smeralda”. A 54-year-old tourist from the Chinese Macao Special Administrative Region and her companion were isolated at night in the ship’s medical center. Individual photos from the boat are circulating on Twitter, showing waiting people. They were apparently taken on Thursday by an Italian on board.

The fifth largest cruise ship in the world had therefore entered the port of Civitavecchia as part of a Mediterranean tour from Palma de Mallorca. Italian media said the couple flew from Hong Kong to Milan on January 25 and boarded Savona.
