Influx of corona patients in hospitals is rising
The number of corona patients requiring hospitalization is increasing. In the past week, an average of nearly 120 people a day ended up in an intensive care unit or nursing unit. That average is rising for the third day in a row and that is the longest period of increase since the end of November.

Many questions at the GGD: opt for a second or a booster injection?
The call center of GGD Haaglanden and Hollands Midden is often called by people who have had corona and have one vaccination. They wonder whether it is better to get a second shot or a booster shot. The advice of the health service is to get a second shot.

To start with: for the protection against corona, it does not matter whether you get a second shot or a booster shot. They are both the same doses of vaccine. (…) The GGD registers all injections in CoronIT. This is a system in which we keep track of who has had which jab. Our system is directly linked to the VWS system for the CoronaCheck app. In our system we are currently allowed to register a maximum of three injections per Dutch person. There is one exception: people with a medical indication may receive more injections. The system of the CoronaCheck app looks at when you had your last shot. You will receive your QR code with two injections. Whether that is a second shot or a booster shot, it doesn’t matter. It therefore does not matter for the Dutch QR code whether you get a second or a booster shot.

It is different for abroad. There are countries where you only get access if you have received three shots. Now our system registers punctures in sequence for safety reasons. If you get one shot and then get the booster shot (shot 3), you may no longer get shot 2 because it will then be blocked in our system. In addition, we cannot and cannot change the injection administration afterwards. We can therefore not retroactively convert your booster shot to a second shot. In short: if you get a booster shot while you have only had one vaccination shot, you have a total of two shots. You can only get the third shot if the government decides on a new booster campaign in the future. Until then, you cannot travel to countries that require three shots. To prevent this, we recommend getting a second shot. Then you can still get your booster in 3 months. Unfortunately, you will still not be able to visit countries that require three shots for the next three months. But if you get a booster shot in three months, you can travel to those countries from then on. By opting for a second injection, you therefore keep more options open for yourself in the future.

Music performance Gebr. the Nobel Saturday
The band Cosmic Debris will perform on the roof of Gebr. the Nobel. ‘It is enough! Corona tension towards the Olympics
Skaters say they are on a roller coaster of emotions in the run-up to the Olympic Games in Beijing (China). They are certain of a participation in the Winter Games in February, but must still fear exclusion due to an infection. Corona is the only thing that can stop you. Handball goalkeeper Ravensbergen tests positive at EC
Bart Ravensbergen from Voorschoten has tested positive for the corona virus. The goalkeeper of the Dutch handball team has to be in isolation and can not participate indefinitely in the European championship in Budapest that is currently underway.

The 28-year-old closing post was still under the bar on Thursday evening when the Netherlands came into action against Olympic champion France (lost 34-24, ed.). On Saturday, the Orange squad will play against Montenegro and Denmark will be the opponent on Monday. René de Knegt from Zoetermeer is flown in as a replacement, but is only allowed to join the player group on Friday after a negative PCR test in Hungary.

The coronavirus continues to bother handball men. Five players are currently in isolation. During the previous game, a recently tested positive player returned to the judging corps. Due to the large number of corona infections, Alphenaar Niko Blaauw was flown in in the meantime to supplement the Dutch team.

Booster without an appointment in Gouda, Nieuwerkerk, Alphen and Noordwijkerhout
From next Sunday you can go without an appointment for a booster shot at the vaccination location of GGD Hollands Midden. A day later, on Monday, the booster shot can be picked up without appointment in Alphen aan den Rijn and Noordwijkerhout. Boosting without an appointment has been possible for a few days now in Bergambacht, Leiderdorp and the Haaglanden region.

OMT discusses quarantine rules education
On Friday, the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) will meet to discuss the quarantine rules for education. The sector hopes that there is room for relaxation of the guidelines. At the moment it is still the case that an entire class has to go home if three or more students are infected. ‘Sometimes 25 students go home who have no complaints,’ says a representative of the VO-raad, the branch organization of secondary education.

According to a poll by the General Association of School Leaders (AVS), an average of a quarter of the students is at home this week. Most of them can’t go to school because of the coronavirus. According to the AVS, the current measures make it very difficult to organize decent education. The GGD directors also support the appeal from education for relaxation of the quarantine policy. According to them, the policy has overshot its target and the damage to health is actually increasing.

Last week, the cabinet already introduced relaxed quarantine rules in general. For example, people who have had their booster shot more than a week ago no longer have to quarantine. People who have tested positive for the coronavirus less than weeks ago and who have no complaints do not have to stay at home after contact with an infected person.
