Coronavirus: on average more than 500 infections per day, hospital admissions are also increasing

In the week of August 30 to September 5, the number of new corona infections rose to an average of 502.1 per day. That is an increase of 13 percent compared to the previous week. In total, 89,141 Belgians have already been infected with the corona virus. The number of deaths is still falling, but the number of hospitalizations is rising slightly. This is evident from the figures of the health institute Sciensano.

An average of 2.3 corona patients also died daily during that period. That is still a decrease of 2 percent. The death toll in our country currently stands at 9,912.

Between August 30 and September 5, an average of 18.4 corona patients per day were also admitted to Belgian hospitals. That is a slight increase of 4 percent. Since the start of the corona pandemic, 19,165 people have already been hospitalized with Covid-19 in our country.

In the last two weeks, there was 57.7 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in our country. The national r-value was 1.133 on Tuesday. This means that 1 infected person infects more than 1 other person on average.

Child mortality worldwide possibly sky high

Never before have so few children under 5 died worldwide as now. In 1990, some 5 million young children were still killed, but 30 years ago the figure was more than 12 million. Children’s organization UNICEF warns that the corona pandemic could potentially increase child mortality sharply again.

Unicef warns that if children and mothers are denied access to health services, millions of children under the age of 5 will die. Also, according to Unicef, women should not be afraid to give birth in hospital for fear of corona infection.

Worldwide, specific health care for children and mothers is disrupted. This concerns, for example, health checks, vaccinations and antenatal and postnatal care. This is partly due to the burden on health services due to the corona crisis.

(Spain is the first European country to reach half a million infections.)
