Coronavirus infects the inner lining of blood vessels – scientists

Swiss scientists have found that with a new coronavirus infection, damage to the inner membrane (endothelium) of blood vessels throughout the body occurs, which ultimately can lead to dysfunction of the human internal organs. This was reported by the South China Morning Post, citing an article in The Lancet magazine.

Researchers from the University of Zurich found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects the endothelial layer of blood vessels, which leads to impaired microcirculation in the organs up to a complete stop of blood circulation, which in turn causes problems in all organs of the person, and primarily the heart suffers , kidneys and intestines. An autopsy revealed that in patients with COVID-19, the membranes of the blood vessels were inflamed and “full of virus”, and the function of the vessels was impaired in all their organs.

This in particular explains why people with blood vessel diseases (hypertension, patients with diabetes, obesity), as well as smokers, are more likely to suffer a new coronavirus infection.

Thus, scientists conclude that the prevention of COVID-19 should be the strengthening of vascular health, and in the treatment of this disease it is advisable to use drugs that strengthen the vascular endothelium, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (popular heart drugs) and anti-inflammatory drugs.
