Coronavirus in Europe, contagion rises everywhere. Italy even “better” than the continental average

For over a month in Europe the virus circulates freely again. But it goes at different speeds. L‘Italy, the United Kingdom and the Germany, which in August have begun to exceed a thousand cases a day, travel to the same, not very sure but still under control: they just over 20 infections per 100 thousand inhabitants in the last two weeks, well under the European average of the period was 46 (steadily increasing for 38 days, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control).

On the Continent, for some, it has accelerated in a much more worrying way. There France since Ferragosto has registered over 54 thousand cases, that is 82 new positives for every 100 thousand people, fivefold compared to a month ago. On this scale the Croatia has exceeded 80, touching 84 of the Romania, the only country where the death rate is still high (3 per 100 thousand). And then there is Spain – where Madrid is now also watching with concern – which despite itself earned the black jersey of Europe with 96,000 cases in two weeks, that is 205 for every 100 thousand people. So while the reciprocal lists of countries to avoid, or for which a tampon or a quarantine is required at the time of return, someone has already closed its borders: this week Hungary and Ukraine they announced – first and at the moment only – the ban on entry to foreigners from the beginning of September.

Nobody had gone that far after the reopening in early summer, supported by declining numbers and the need to restart the economy (with tourism in the lead). The Greece from Monday, flights to and from Catalonia will be prohibited; Berlin, which previously only required a return test, urged it to stop traveling to high-risk areas (including much of Spain and several areas of France, such as Paris and the Cote d’Azur), threatening an economic disincentive to the citizens: whoever has to stay in quarantine and cannot work will not have any compensation, and will have to wait at least 5 days to be tested.

The clear message: better not to cross borders. But on what the dangers are we go in no particular order. Like many others, Italy asks for a swab from those returning from Spain, Malta (110 cases per 100,000) and Croatia , but not yet to those who come from France, which has almost three times the incidence of infections in Greece (29) on which we instead impose quarantine. Nearly Covid-free Norway has even added Germany to its blacklist and it will introduce quarantines for anyone coming from a country that has more than 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants: practically all of Europe. There Sweden (28.9 cases out of 100 thousand) on the other hand, it still goes against the tide: it has dropped the invitation not to go to Romania, Bulgaria and the Netherlands, but keeps the one to the United Kingdom. Which, however, has fewer cases than her.
