Coronavirus – death toll in China rises to over 1,700

The number of fatalities caused by the novel corona virus in China has risen to over 1,700. A further 100 people died in the particularly affected Hubei province as a result of the disease, as the local health authorities said on Monday. The official total number of people who died in mainland China from the consequences of the infection increased to 1,765.

The authorities also said that a further 1,933 cases of infection with the pathogen had been confirmed in the province. The total number of cases in mainland China rose to at least 70,400. The vast majority of deaths and infections continue to occur in Hubei. The authorities have largely isolated the province from the outside world.

The authorities in Hubei had recently seen a decline in new infections. The latest figures were again slightly higher than those from the previous day, but significantly below the figures for Friday and Saturday. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Sunday of hasty optimism. It is “impossible” to predict the further course of the epidemic, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized.

A team of international experts led by the World Health Organization (WHO) has now arrived in Beijing to talk to Chinese officials. The WHO had asked China to provide more information about the diagnosis of coronavirus cases. “We are looking forward to this extremely important collaboration that will contribute to global knowledge of the Covid-19 outbreak,” said WHO chief Tedros on Twitter.
