Dhe new corona virus from China has now arrived in Germany. The Bavarian health authorities confirmed a first case on Tuesday: A 33-year-old man from the Landsberg am Lech district has become infected in his company in a suburb of Munich.

According to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), he contracted a colleague from China who had come to a training course in Stockdorf in the Starnberg district last week – but only noticed her infection on the return flight to China.

The novel coronavirus 2019-nCoV can trigger a lung disease from which more than 100 people have already died in the main distribution country China – most of which were elderly patients with serious previous illnesses. The total number of diseases known worldwide has now risen to more than 4,500; in China at least 106 people died of the lung disease.

The employee of the company Webasto from Bavaria had tested positive for the virus on Monday – by then he had gone back to work. “He is doing very well, yesterday morning he was still working,” said LGL President Andreas Zapf on Tuesday. “He is fever-free and currently has no respiratory symptoms,” added the treating chief physician Clemens Wendtner from the Schwabing Clinic. The man is in an isolation room, there is no danger for other patients.

The authorities were initially not aware of any other suspected cases, but according to LGL, 40 people who had contact with the Chinese and German Webasto employees are under surveillance and are asked not to leave their homes. The 33-year-old patient is a family man, and according to the Ministry of Health, his child goes to a crèche in the Landsberg am Lech district. This is now also under observation, said LGL President Zapf. The head of the Infectiology Task Force, Martin Hoch, emphasized: “The number can still increase.”

Virus comes from Wuhan

The new virus 2019-nCoV originally probably comes from a market in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where it probably jumped from humans to wild animals traded there. According to the current assessment of experts, the novel lung disease appears to be mild in most cases, possibly even without symptoms.

Transmissions before the first symptoms are considered very rare. The first confirmed case of coronavirus in Germany may also provide new insights into the contagion pathways of the lung disease. According to the first findings, the man was infected with the Chinese woman, although at the time she did not show any symptoms of the disease.

“It’s new that we know that,” said Task Force Head Hoch. The case in Bavaria, in particular, is also one of the only three known records to date worldwide in which the infection occurred outside of China.
