Due to the corona pandemic, sports events were canceled in 2020. Much is still unclear this year. Ironman, marathon, jumping and gallop derbies and tennis on Rothenbaum should take place.
With the Ironman in June, the Triathlon in July and the Cyclassics in August, Oliver Schiek is responsible for three of Hamburg’s major international sporting events. But Schiek still cannot answer the most important question in February: what exactly will the Hamburg sports summer 2021 look like.
Sports events 2020 canceled due to Corona
Last year the corona pandemic messed up the Hamburg sports calendar. Large events such as marathons, cyclassics or tennis at Rothenbaum could not take place at all or with only a few spectators.

Ironman, triathlon and cyclassics should take place
Unlike last year, Ironman, Triathlon and Cyclassics are to be held again in 2021 – also with thousands of hobby starters. With restrictions if necessary, says Schiek. The concept includes, among other things, equalized starting fields and contact tracking. The spectators are left with the problem.
Concerns about spectator numbers in equestrian sport
Volker Wulff, organizer of the show jumping and dressage derby, is also particularly concerned about the audience. The equestrian spectacle usually attracts up to 100,000 people to Klein Flottbek. Many tickets for 2021 have been sold for two years.
Tennis, gallop and jumping derbies are planned
Last May, of all things, had to do that because of Corona 100th Jumping Derby canceled. Now it is time to celebrate with a slimmed-down supporting program – but only in August and only when spectators are really allowed to come.
There should be a shortened gallop derby in Horn as early as July. It usually includes up to eight days of racing. So far, only three are planned for 2021. Only if spectators are admitted, it may be increased to five race days. Also in July there will be the tennis tournament at Rothenbaum – probably only with a limited number of spectators: inside.
