Corona peak in New York?
USA records 10,000 virus deaths

The USA is struggling with the corona virus particularly hard. 10,000 people have now died of Covid-19. For the extremely badly affected city of New York, however, there is also a small glimmer of hope.
In the United States, more than 10,000 people have now died after being infected with the coronavirus. The number of known infections has now risen to around 350,000, significantly more than in any other country in the world. This comes from data from the American University of John Hopkins. Meanwhile, in New York, the city hardest hit by the epidemic, hope is growing that the worst will be over.
The top health official in the United States, Jerome Adams, had already prepared Americans for an increase in the death rate. “This is going to be the hardest and saddest week in the life of most Americans,” Adams told Fox News. “This will be our PearlHarbor moment, our 9/11 moment – only it will not be limited to individual locations, it will happen across the country.”
The USA, a country with 330 million inhabitants, is hardest hit by the Corona crisis in terms of the absolute number of infected people. However, the number of cases in individual countries can only be compared to a limited extent due to the different test rates and the expected high number of unreported cases.
Among the countries most severely affected by the lung disease Covid-19, the university registered the highest proportion of corona deaths relative to the population so far in Spain and Italy. In both countries, around 27 people per 100,000 inhabitants died after infection. In the US, there were 2.9 deaths per 100,000 population.
Hope for New York
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo sees the light at the end of the tunnel for the state, which has been particularly hard hit by the corona virus. Although the number of people who died of the pandemic in New York rose by 599 to 4,758 compared to the previous day, this was in the range of the previous days, Cuomo said at his daily press conference. In addition, the number of those newly admitted to the hospitals has decreased significantly, as has the number of intubates. The number of those who tested positive for Covid-19 is now more than 130,000.
Cuomo warned the New Yorkers against becoming careless and underestimating the virus. “It’s not the time to play Frisbee with your friend in the park.” Cuomo had the closure of all non-“vital” shops and schools extended until the end of April. He emphasized that the health system was “at its capacity limit” and that it would remain so in the coming days. It could also be that the numbers will rise again.
