The virologists had examined the breast milk of two women for the genetic material (RNA) of the new coronavirus, who shared a room with their newborns after delivery in the hospital.
When one of the women developed disease symptoms, she was isolated with her newborn and both tested positive for Sars-CoV-2. The neighbor noticed symptoms later, but was then, like her child, also tested positive.

Mother wore mouth-nose protection while breastfeeding
The scientists found no evidence of the coronavirus in the breast milk samples of the woman who was ill first. The result in the samples from the second mother, however, was positive four times. Why this is not yet clear, said Münch. After 14 days, no virus was detectable in breast milk and the mother and her child recovered from Covid-19.
The mother, who later fell ill, had worn mouth and nose protection when handling her child and had disinfected her hands and breasts. In addition, she regularly sterilized the breastfeeding utensils. The researchers emphasize that it is currently still unclear whether the baby will actually become infected while breastfeeding.

“Our study shows that Sars-CoV-2 can be detected in breastfeeding women with acute infection in breast milk. But we do not yet know how often this is the case, whether the viruses in milk are also infectious and can be transmitted to babies through breastfeeding. ”Typically, the virus is passed on from person to person via droplet infection.

The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously found no evidence of the new coronavirus in breast milk. “There is no reason to avoid or stop breastfeeding,” the organization’s recommendations say.
