Corona in Lower Saxony: hard lockdown or not? | NDR.de – news

Status: 09.12.2020 8:27 p.m.

The number of new infections is increasing across Germany. Many countries want to tighten the measures after Christmas until a hard lockdown – only Lower Saxony is taking a special route.

Lower Saxony’s Deputy Prime Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU) announced this week in the Lower Saxony state parliament that the state government sees no reason for an immediate reassessment of the measures. The so-called partial lockdown works, if not to the extent hoped, said the Minister of Economics. Anke Pörksen, spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony State Chancellery, confirmed the course on Wednesday. “There are very different infection situations in the various regions in Germany. Of course, the state government will orientate itself to the situation in Lower Saxony when taking further measures,” said Poerksen. The northern neighbors Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania want to close despite the lower 7-day incidence.

430 corona violations found on trains

On Monday, federal police officers checked compliance with the corona rules on trains in Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Bremen. The result: In a period of nine hours, they found 430 cases, a third more violations than usual in 24 hours. According to a federal police spokesman, the officials had issued warnings and initiated fine proceedings in the case of inconsiderate passengers

Vaccination centers across the country should be operational by December 15th

Meanwhile, Lower Saxony is continuing to build the vaccination infrastructure. Around 50 vaccination centers should be on standby next Tuesday. In Hildesheim, for example, the gym of a school is being rebuilt and should be ready in a few days. The renovation requires a lot of organization and also the help of volunteers from fire departments and technical aid organizations. Citizens should later go through a so-called vaccination route, from registration to vaccination itself.

First vaccinations in December?

According to the Corona crisis team, the first 100,000 people in Lower Saxony could possibly be vaccinated in December. In the meantime, a private test center for so-called rapid tests has opened in Hanover. The Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVN) are critical of the company. The market for rapid tests is still tense and private use could lead to the tests becoming scarce, the KVN said. There are also two centers with the same offer in Osnabrück.

104 Corona infections in Franciscan monasteries

Two larger corona outbreaks have occurred again in the west of the country. In a Franciscan monastery in Thuine (Emsland district) at least 104 nuns have become infected with the virus. In Glandorf (Osnabrück district), an owner-managed medium-sized meat company has been closed since Tuesday. At least nine people had tested positive for Covid-19 there. Because the employees did not work in shifts, but in changing groups, the health service has quarantined the entire workforce.

In times of crisis, solidarity and volunteering are needed

This year, Norddeutscher Rundfunk is fighting for disadvantaged people in the country during the Christmas season. With the charity campaign “Hand in Hand for Lower Saxony”, the NDR is calling for donations in cooperation with the Diakonisches Werk and the Caritas associations. The crisis isolates people from social participation and above all creates a need for discussion. Volunteer telephone chaplains have seen an increase in calls over the past few weeks. They estimate that three out of four conversations are about Corona.

Corona hotline in Lower Saxony occupied even longer

The country has set up a telephone hotline for questions about the corona virus: It is available Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the number (0511) 120 60 00 The hotline is manned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Citizens received general information there about the corona virus and its consequences, according to the Interior Ministry. Anyone who thinks they have been infected with the coronavirus should contact the on-call medical service on 116 117 or their family doctor. The doctor then clarifies over the phone whether the case is suspected and takes appropriate measures. If an infection is detected, the patient has to be quarantined at home. Contact persons of the sick person are also isolated at home for 14 days if they are in close contact. The most important protective measures remain: regularly Wash hands and do not cough or sneeze into your hand.
