Controversy Surrounding Jakarta’s City Forest and LGBT Activities

Jakarta

City Forest which is located in Cawang, East Jakarta, has received scrutiny because it is suspected of being a gathering place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT). According to Komnas HAM, efforts to control LGBT “hooks” have the potential to violate human rights.

Acting (Pj) Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono responded to this assumption. Heru emphasized that Satpol PP will take action if they find activities that disturb public order in facilities belonging to the DKI Provincial Government.

“If the (facility) belongs to the regional government through the Head of Satpol PP takes action against residents, it means those residents are committing negative actions. That’s the answer. Throwing garbage can also be dealt with, there is a regional regulation (fine) of IDR 500,000. Not comfortable, shouting in the park we can also take action against it. That’s the answer, please residents interact in the park in a positive way,” said Heru Budi at the DKI Jakarta City Hall, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, Friday (28/7/2023).

Heru Budi also reminded that urban forests and parks in Jakarta are used for positive activities. Heru guaranteed that his party would take action in accordance with the provisions. Heru appealed to residents to make good use of regional facilities.

“The park is for positive interaction. Yes, residents just do it in the park is to interact positively,” said Heru.

“The regional government of DKI is doing it according to the existing rules. Motorcycle parking in parks can also be dealt with. It means he didn’t do anything positive, right, we think that’s an example,” he continued.

The City Forest is now Guarded 24 Hours

The city forest is now guarded by Satpol PP officers. Even the City Government (Pemkot) of East Jakarta (East Jakarta) has set up a 24-hour guard tent.

When visited detikcom, at 10.00 WIB, Friday (28/7/2023), the tent looked very simple. The blue tent seemed open.

Inside the tent, only two wooden tables and a long wooden bench were visible. The guard tent stood near the entrance to the Cawang City Forest.

Apart from that, the forest fences that once looked damaged have also been repaired. The tree branches looked trimmed. The appearance of the Cawang City Forest is cleaner than before.
