Coronavirus in Belgium: “We are seeing results but efforts must be maintained”

To date, Belgium has 20,814 people tested positive for coronavirus. 5,840 had to be hospitalized and 3,986 were discharged from the hospital. 1,632 people have died from infection since the start of the epidemic.

Emmanuel André, Steven Van Gucht, Yves Stevens and Benoît Ramacker returned to the latest data relating to the coronavirus epidemic in our country and clarified certain points.

Fewer intensive care and ventilator patients in Belgian hospitals

The number of intensive care patients decreased on Monday, April 6. There are 4 fewer people than the day before. This is also the case for the number of Belgians who must benefit from the help of a respirator. They are 11 less compared to this Sunday.

The situation remains critical in hospitals

Belgium has seen the results of its efforts in recent days. The measures adopted seem to be bearing fruit. “If some indicators are improving, like the number of people hospitalized or the number of patients in intensive care, we would like to draw your attention to the possible effect of the weekend, even if, in general , we are moving towards stabilization, “said Emmanuel André. In hospitals, the workload remains very high. “We are seeing results but efforts must be maintained to return to an acceptable level. The situation in hospitals remains critical.”

Reinforced measures have become routine for many. Social distancing has become commonplace for many Belgians. “All these measures, all these reflexes are now bearing fruit, the situation at the moment is almost under control, and it is largely thanks to this solidarity investment that we have all carried from the start, but we must continue”, added Benoît Ramacker.

Respect of the measures this weekend

Regarding the weekend, the national crisis center feared that the Belgians would ignore restrictions to take advantage of the good weather. “You took up the challenge, greeted Benoît Ramacker. A large part of us took advantage of the sun while respecting the measures”.

Same number of deaths in Germany and Belgium

In Belgium, significant efforts are made to report on what is happening in and outside hospitals. “We count all the deaths and try to give a better reflection of the situation. In other countries, it is different and that explains the differences noted in the figures”, detailed Emmanuel André.

Deaths outside hospitals

20% of those who died died outside hospitals and therefore there was no established test. “These are what are known as suspected coronaviruses,” said Emmanuel André, believing that they were largely elderly.

Number of Belgians infected or deceased abroad

“We receive information from certain embassies but we do not have a global view today,” regretted Emmanuel André. The latter invited Belgians abroad who have contracted the virus to report it to their embassy.
