Controversy Surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Development Timeline

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been on the shelves since yesterday, but the title has already received a lot of criticism due to its half-baked campaign. However, there is a reason for the downer, because the brand new shooter is said to have been developed in just 18 months, half the development time of a normal Call of Duty.

The news comes from financial news agency Bloomberg. Several employees told the outlet that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was originally going to be an expansion of the second part. The story would have an extra chapter in Mexico, making 18 months enough to develop the game.

Not much later, the top management of Activision decided to reboot the project, making it a premium sequel to Modern Warfare 2. The title had to have all the classic elements of a typical Call of Duty game.

Countless employees were disappointed, as the Activision leadership had promised that after Call of Duty: Vanguard crunch would no longer be necessary. However, employees were forced to work during weekends, as well as overtime, to complete the game on time.

Furthermore, all finished installments of Modern Warfare 3 always had to be approved by Infinity Ward, that original studio behind the Modern Warfare sub-franchise. This led to slow and inefficient working methods, sometimes resulting in major changes. Something that caused a lot of frustration among the employees.

As you know, Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Sledgehammers deliver a Call of Duty game every three years and in turn. Although Modern Warfare 3 evolved from expansion to full-blown release, development time was not doubled. And so Sledgehammer Games had to finish the title in 18 months. Striking: a representative of Activision announced via Twitter that the game was always intended as a premium release:

So the word of the management against the word of the employees. Funnily enough, Microsoft, which is now the parent company of Activision Blizzard, remains remarkably quiet. Sony has also surprisingly not yet made any announcements, although Modern Warfare 3 should be the last ‘premium’ release in the contract that the publisher had concluded with Activision.
