IWGB Files Complaint Against Rockstar Games Following Layoffs
London, UK – The Self-reliant Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) union has filed a formal complaint against Rockstar Games on behalf of employees recently terminated by the studio, alleging the layoffs constitute unlawful trade union oppression. The action follows the dismissal of approximately 40 Rockstar Games employees several weeks ago, reportedly due to the sharing of confidential details in a public chat.
The IWGB contends the terminations were not based on legitimate security concerns, but rather a intentional effort to suppress union activity. The union will provide legal portrayal to the affected employees, arguing the dismissals were a form of “duping and collective dismissal” linked to their organizing efforts.
According to a statement provided to Eurogamer, the IWGB attempted to resolve the situation with Rockstar Games through diplomatic channels prior to filing the complaint, but received no response. “Rockstar stood its ground and let the studio go in an unacceptable and unlawful manner,” the statement reads.
“This is a simple case of trade union oppression,” stated Alex Marshall, Chairman of the IWGB. “We will prepare a vigorous defense with the entire legal team of the IWGB.” Marshall further emphasized that private chats regarding union activities, such as those on Discord, are legally protected, and that contractual clauses cannot supersede UK law.He warned the lawsuit should “serve as a warning to any employer who believes he can act with impunity against organized workers.”
The case centers on what information was shared by employees and whether it legitimately constitutes confidential company data. Typically, such information pertains to unreleased projects, rather than internal company operations. The outcome of the complaint will likely set a precedent regarding employee rights and union activity within the UK gaming industry.
