Indraji Dwi Mulyawan, an Internal Medicine Specialist from Siloam Hospitals Putera Bahagia Cirebon, said Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia or an increase in blood sugar that occurs due to abnormalities in insulin secretion, insulin action or both.

The trigger is the failure of the pancreas to produce adequate amounts of the hormone insulin and has an impact on increasing blood glucose levels.

If it is not controlled, explained Doctor Indraji, it can cause acute complications and chronic complications. This acute complication is dangerous, sudden in nature and endangers human life.

“As for chronic complications, apart from disrupting the quality of life, treatment is also expensive,” he said.

In addition, during the Covid-19 pandemic, people with diabetes are accompanied by heart disease, are at risk and are very vulnerable to being exposed to the corona virus which can damage organs.
