The case is being updated.
The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution condemning and calling for a halt to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
141 countries voted in favor of the resolution. 5 countries voted against. 35 abstained.
Over the past week, several UN bodies have worked intensively to agree on a resolution condemning what several member states have described, among other things, as a cruel attack on Ukraine.
On Monday, the 11th Extraordinary General Assembly of the United Nations began since 1950. The background for the meeting is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
At 10:00 local time on Wednesday, the various representatives rushed into the General Assembly after two long days of speeches.
The General Assembly consists of all UN member states.
Norway is among the countries that have put forward the proposal. The resolution contains, among other things, a condemnation of the invasion that began on Thursday 24 February.
A similar proposal was put forward in the UN Security Council last week. but Russia used its veto power to thwart the proposal.
– A genocide
“It is clear that Russia’s goal is not an occupation, but a genocide,” Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Serhi Kyslytsia, told the UN General Assembly.
– We live in a generation-defined moment. Our generation is the generation that should be saved from the atrocities of the war, said the UN ambassador.
– That is why our predecessors created the UN. But today it is we who must save future generations.
