Saga of Fluffy Library Cat Georgi Sparks Internet Uproar: Director Faces Backlash Over Expulsion Decision

The saga with the fluffy cat Georgi from the “Ivan Vazov” National Library took on dramatic proportions after it became clear that he would be expelled. A petition immediately appeared on the Internet and social media against the director of the second largest book depository in Bulgaria, Dimitar Minev.

It is titled “Bye Director” and despite the eaten comma, it quite seriously calls for his removal. The reason is his decision to evict Zorko just five months after the library team announced it was adopting the kitten.

The furore over the colorful four-legged animal erupted after a petition was published telling its story and calling for it not to be chased. It was signed by thousands. This sparked a flurry of posts on social media, and Facebook stopped the viral spread of links to the petition to hundreds of subscribers.

After numerous media reports, it became clear that although the “Zhorko” cause enjoys serious support, there are also those who do not find it right for this animal to inhabit the library.

The director Dimitar Minev even announced that a counter-petition is being prepared in support of the management’s decision to remove the quadruped. This led many to call on good people to open their hearts and adopt Zorko.

The whole story reached a very familiar situation for children, when they cry to their parents that they want a kitten/dog/parrot/fish, and on the other side the parent says: “Either the kitten/dog/parrot/fish or me”.

Otherwise, Minev did not hide that 80 years ago the library had a special budget for feeding cats – the only saviors from the destroyers of books, the mice.

The non-governmental animal protection organization iCat Rescue also called the director’s decision to expel Joro scandalous and called him an honorary citizen of the library and a favorite of all visitors.
