Residents worried about the sudden surge in mosquito population
Butte County, California – Concerns are mounting in Butte County as the number of mosquitos seems to have skyrocketed out of nowhere. Alarmed residents have been flooding the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control Districts with calls, expressing their concerns about the significant rise in mosquito activity.
Assistant Manager, Aaron Lumsden, from the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control Districts, sheds light on the situation. According to Lumsden, the sudden increase in mosquito activity can be attributed to the rising winter temperatures of up to 60 degrees. Mosquitoes, which typically hibernate during winter, become more voracious when they re-emerge from their long slumber.
Anopheles Mosquitoes – The Primary Culprits
When contacted for more information, Lumsden specified that the prevailing mosquito problem currently facing residents is primarily caused by the Anopheles Mosquito. Born the previous summer, these particular mosquitos wake up during dry spells, seeking blood meals to sustain themselves and lay more eggs.
Limitations during Winter Months
Unfortunately, the increase in mosquito activity during winter puts limitations on the mosquito control efforts carried out by the vector district. Lumsden explained that inspections and treatment of water sources can be conducted, but the “fogging” method typically employed in warmer spring and summer months becomes an ineffective measure during winter.
Nonetheless, Lumsden assures residents that they are committed to assisting in identifying and inspecting problem areas while doing everything within their power to minimize the mosquito issue. Additionally, residents are recommended to use bug repellent as an extra precaution.
Hope for the Future
With the winter weather persisting and the possible increase in showers in the forecast, rain is expected to drive the mosquitoes back into hibernation, offering some respite to the impacted areas until warmer and drier weather returns.
