The lawsuit alleges that Holmes only shows his feelings in the final novels, arguing that Springer’s description and Netflix’s adaptation would therefore violate his copyrights.
He also notes that when Doyle wrote the latest novels, he had lost both his brother and eldest son in World War I: “It was no longer enough that Holmes’s character was the brightest analytical and rational mind. Holmes needed to be human. ”
The document says that in addition to using publicly available characters, Springer’s novels copy Conan Doyle’s original novelties into stories that are still protected by copyright.
“Among other elements copied, Springer’s novels make extensive use of the offending transformation of Conan Doyle’s Holmes from cold and calculating to warm, respectful, and friendly in their relationships.”
In addition to Netflix, the lawsuit is also directed at Springer, its publishing label Penguin Random House and the producer of the latest film, Legendary Pictures.
