Companies rate location factors with “three minus”

Koblenz (dpa / lrs) – Around five weeks before the state elections, Rhineland-Palatinate companies gave the most important location factors in the state a “three minus”. Satisfaction with broadband and mobile phone connections as well as with the digitization of administration and schools is lowest, as the business location survey of the four chambers of industry and commerce (IHK) in the state presented on Friday shows. In these three areas, the companies surveyed gave an average of 3.8, 4.0 and 4.3. At the same time, they made it clear that broadband and mobile communications are the top issues for them. The average rating for the eleven most important location factors was 3.4.

Satisfaction with the broader question about the business location, for which there is an overall grade of 2.9, is somewhat greater. “This is a solid rating that still leaves room for improvement,” said the chief executive of the IHK-Pfalz, Tibor Müller. According to his statements, this overall rating also includes the assessments of a whole range of other criteria such as legal security or an environment worth living in. According to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the mood was determined between 1457 companies with a total of 217,000 employees between mid-December and mid-January.

Not only the supply of broadband and mobile radio, but also the further expansion of the transport infrastructure will be a “major construction site for the next state government,” said Günter Jertz from the Rheinhessen Chamber of Commerce. The reduction of bureaucracy and the waiver of special fees are also important for companies. At the same time, the IHK representatives reaffirmed the demand on politicians to show companies in the country the prospect of ending the corona restrictions. A new state parliament will be elected on March 14th in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The development of the business location Rhineland-Palatinate in the past five years was rated by 6 percent of the companies surveyed as “positive” and another 32 percent as “predominantly positive”. 51 percent saw no change. 2 percent assessed the development as “negative”, another 9 percent as “predominantly negative”.

When asked about the overall grade for the location, 2 percent of those surveyed gave it “very good”, 35 percent “good”, 40 percent “satisfactory” and 16 percent “sufficient”. 5 percent gave the grade “poor” and 2 percent “unsatisfactory”.

The CDU’s top candidate for the state elections, Christian Baldauf, said that the survey gave Economics Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) a “miserable testimony”. He particularly emphasized the individual ratings of the survey for broadband and mobile communications connections, digitization and infrastructure and accused the state government of “failure”. The CDU MP Helmut Martin stated that the traffic light coalition was “miles away” from a long-term and reliable economic policy.

The DGB state chairman Dietmar Muscheid said that for the business location Rhineland-Palatinate it was crucial that there would also be a sufficient number of well-trained specialists in the future. But the willingness of companies to train continues to decline. “It therefore needs a company-financed future fund for good training,” he said. This would also involve companies that do not offer training positions.
