Commotion in San Bernardo: women were run over in a demonstration in memory of Macarena Valdés

A group of women were run over on Saturday afternoon by a private vehicle during a feminist demonstration in San Bernardo, in commemoration of the death of the Mapuche activist Macarena Valdés, four years ago in Panguipulli.

According to an official statement from the municipality, the car hit 6 people who were part of the demonstration. According to the Carabineros, one of the wounds resulted in serious injuries, for which he was transferred to the Barros Luco Hospital. The other victim was left with minor injuries and was treated at the San Bernardo Parish Hospital.

Captain Juan Rosales, patrol officer of the Maipo Prefecture, affirmed that the movement of the march “was being carried out normally, with the police guard at a distance. And when the protesters took Route 5 South heading north, on the third lane, two of the people were struck by a private vehicle in a surprising way. “

The driver of the vehicle was detained, while the SIAT de Carabineros was in charge of the expert reports to establish whether there was intentionality or it was a traffic accident. In the first instance, it was established that the driver had his temporary permit and that he would not be under the influence of alcohol.

“At the moment all the expert reports are being carried out to know the direct participation of this person, if there was any intention or if it was the product of a traffic accident. Apparently it was the product of a loss of control of the vehicle,” added Captain Rosales .

For his part, the mayor of San Bernardo, Leonel Cádiz (PS) condemned what happened and contacted the victims to offer them assistance through the Legal Department of the municipality and the health services.

“We condemn all types of aggression against women, we defend their rights in all circumstances, working for respect and demanding justice in any violation of them in our commune,” Cádiz said in a statement.
