The word winter sales is getting a new dimension these days when you look at FC Barcelona. The traditional Spanish soccer club is said to have more than a billion euros in debt. The departure of some of the best kickers on the planet at bargain prices by the end of the transfer phase on February 1st is threatened.

Allegedly the Catalans have to raise 730 million in the short term, otherwise bankruptcy threatens, the lights go out in the venerable Camp Nou. A quick departure of the six-time world footballer Lionel Messi, whose contract expires in the summer, is now welcome. Nobody burdens the oversized salary structure of the Spaniards like the Argentines.

You can only shake your head at the behavior of the Spaniards on the transfer market in recent years. Many players were bought in installments. FC Bayern also still has money from Arturo Vidal’s 2018 move to Barcelona. What if Barça can’t pay? Does Vidal, who is now playing for Inter Milan, have to go back to Munich? Messi coming as a replacement?

The example of the Spaniards makes it clear once again what kind of money madness there is now in professional football.
