Coal Prices Skyrocketed to a Record High of USD 206.25, What are the Causes?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Commodity prices coal break the record. In the ICE market in Newcastle (Australia), the price of coal reached US$ 206.25 per metric ton or soared 1.63 percent.

Energy Economics observer at Gadjah Mada University, Fahmy Radhi, said that the position of this commodity price reached its highest level in the last decade.

“Before, the price of coal never broke above US$ 200 per metric ton. In early September 2021, the highest price reached only around US$ 150,” said Fahmy when contacted Weather, Thursday, September 30, 2021.

Coal price throughout 2021, it even experienced a decline below US$ 100 per metric ton. Fahmy noted that commodity prices have experienced an upward trend since August 2021.

He explained that the main reason was the increasing demand for coal from China and several countries for coal power plants. Another factor is that currently the countries of the four seasons are entering winter, causing electricity demand to increase and coal prices to rise.
