NATO and Russia clash in Latvia amid influx of migrants

“Incidents” with the Belarusian and Russian sides are possible on the border with the Baltic states, according to Latvia.

Latvia has named two main risks that may affect the confrontation between NATO and Russia. In Riga, they believe that such can be: the influx of migrants from Belarus and the West-2021 exercises, which are scheduled from 10 to 16 September on the territory of the Russian Federation and Belarus. About this, on Sunday, August 8, writes Financial Times with reference to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgar Rinkevich.

According to him, there is a risk of “misunderstanding of some actions” due to the Russian-Belarusian maneuvers.

“When you have a border crisis, there are major military exercises near NATO borders, when you increase the presence of troops on the Lithuanian, Estonian and Polish sides, then all this, of course, increases the likelihood of incidents,” Rinkevich said.

At the same time, he believes that things will not come to full-scale hostilities.

Lithuanian Border Guard said about the shots on the territory of Belarus near the border.

It was also reported that the EU will conduct emergency negotiations due to migrants on the border with Belarus. European ministers will consider options for improving control of the EU’s borders and also measures of solidarity with Lithuania.
