Claims about increase in NATO contingent increase tension – Peskov

NATO Strengthens Presence in Eastern Europe: Kremlin’s Response

Dmitry Peskov claims that allegedly NATO is strengthening its presence in Eastern Europe not because of what Russia is doing.

NATO’s announcements of a troop increase in Eastern Europe are heightening tensions. This was stated by the speaker of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov, informs TASS on Monday, January 24.

“As for specific actions, we see with you the statements that the North Atlantic Alliance publishes about increasing the contingent and concentrating forces and means on the eastern flank. All this leads to the fact that tensions are growing,” Peskov said.

“I want to point out that all this is not happening because of what we, Russia, are doing. It’s all happening because of what NATO, the United States are doing. [Америки], and due to the information that they disseminate,” the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation says.

He also states that the “information hysteria”, allegedly launched in the public space by the United States and members of the Alliance, also contributes to the growth of tension.

According to Peskov, a few days ago an “information stuffing” was made that Russia was evacuating employees of its embassy in Kiev.

“[Это] was the result [такой] tantrums, but in the end it all came down to the State Department’s recommendation,” Peskov said.

“Such actions and increased NATO activity near our borders cannot be ignored by our military, who are responsible for the security of our country,” the Kremlin speaker said.

At the same time, about the exercises of the ships of the Baltic Fleet, Peskov said: “After all, there is a constant process of exercises, maneuvers, military development, which has never stopped and will continue to continue.”

Recall that NATO strengthens presence in Eastern Europe. The countries of the Alliance put their forces on alert and transfer additional ships and fighters to the countries of Eastern Europe.

It was also reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov voiced part of Russia’s demands to NATO. Russia demands to return to the configurations of 1997, when Bulgaria and Romania were not members of NATO.
