Citrus Fruits Found to Stabilize Blood Sugar in Type 2 Diabetes: Study

Scientists from University of Tasmania as part of a scientific team discovered that the use citrus stabilizes blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of complications in type 2 diabetes, reports Sports.kz with reference to Gazeta.ru.

The results of the study were published in Science Direct.

In their work, scientists analyzed 129 studies on the therapeutic role of citrus fruits in diabetes mellitus. It turns out that flavonols and flavanones, organic compounds found in lemons, oranges and grapefruits, have powerful antioxidant properties that help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Oxidative stress (the process of cell damage as a result of oxidation) in diabetes mellitus can be triggered by hyperglycemia – an increase in blood glucose levels. Flavonols and flavanones can slow down the oxidation process.

Compounds such as naringin and hesperidin may reduce the risk of diabetes. They inhibit (reduce the activity) of glucose transport enzymes, which deliver glucose molecules to cells, penetrating the cell membrane. This reduces the absorption of glucose in the intestines, resulting in less glucose being released into the bloodstream and reducing the risk of hyperglycemia, a condition common to all types of diabetes.

Quercetin, a citrus flavonol (vitamin P), has also been found to prevent the development of diabetic nephropathy, the kidney damage caused by diabetes. Another flavonol, hesperidin, reduces the risk of retinopathy – atrophy of the optic nerve and subsequent blindness due to pathological changes in the retina due to diabetes.
