The Hollywood Producers Association voted “Nomadland” for the best film of the year on Wednesday, further strengthening its chances of winning at the Oscars with this award.
While the pandemic has forced studios to postpone the release of big productions, the intimate film by Chloé Zhao, which follows modern nomads crisscrossing the United States in their motorhomes (mostly amateur actors), has already won the supreme award at the Golden Globes. And it has once again beaten the pawn to its main rivals, “The Chicago Seven” and “Mank”, both produced by Netflix.
“In a year where we have all led such isolated lives and where films have seemed so essential, we are proud to have made a film that speaks to the community and brings us together,” said Peter Spears, who produced “Nomadland”.
The Producers Guild of America (PGA) awards are considered a relatively reliable barometer for the Oscars to be awarded at the end of April. Made up of some 8,000 professionals who make it rain and shine in Hollywood, the producers’ association has awarded ten of the last thirteen Oscar winners for best film.
Netflix and Amazon in the lead
With the pandemic that caused movie theaters to close and studio schedules upset, video-on-demand services were on the rise this year in the film price race. Netflix and Amazon have collected more than half of the nominations in the cinema category at the PGA, but it is ultimately a film produced by Searchlight, a subsidiary of Disney, which won thanks to “Nomadland”.
Disney also won in the animated film category with “Soul” and in the television film category with the capture of the musical “Hamilton”.
Netflix consoled itself with the award for best documentary for the aquatic drama “The Wisdom of the Octopus”, also well on its way to the Oscars. Also at Netflix, “The Lady’s Game” was awarded miniseries side, as well as the eternal “The Crown” for drama series.
The final season of “Schitt’s Creek” won it unsurprisingly in the comedy category while “Last Week Tonight”, the talk show of Briton John Oliver, was awarded by the PGA for the sixth consecutive year.
