Christine Sinclair: Canada’s Record-Breaking Football Star Retires from International Play in 2023

Canada – Your record is unmatched in the world! Christine Sinclair (40) has scored a whopping 190 goals in 326 games for the Canadian women’s national team. At the end of the year, however, the record holder will hang up her international kicks.

The Canadian association and the long-running favorite announced this on social networks on Friday.

“Olympic champion, world record holder and eternal Canadian hero Christine Sinclair will play her final international match in 2023,” the official statement said.

“It will mark the end of a remarkable 24-year international career in which Canada’s ‘Captain Everything’ both carried and transformed a nation like few other athletes in the history of Canadian sport.”

Association president Charmaine Crooks (61) also said: “Congratulations to Christine on an outstanding career that has been inspiring both on and off the field. Her days as a player with the women’s national team are coming to an end, but her legacy will live on live on in the hearts and ambitions of so many young female athletes in Canada and around the world.”

Even Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (51) spoke up: “We will miss you on the field, but we will always be proud of everything you have achieved – and you should be proud of the legacy you have created. “

The goalgetter, who comes from the Canadian province of British Columbia, made her debut for the Maple Leaf in 2000 at the age of 16. With the “Big Red” she won the Central and North American Championships in 2010 and two bronze medals at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016.

However, their greatest success may have been the gold triumph at the 2021 Games in Tokyo, when Canada prevailed against the Swedes in the final.

Over the course of almost two and a half decades, Sinclair shot in 22 different countries against 43 different opponents. She was successful ten times at the World Championships and twelve times at the Olympics. She also scored 46 goals in CONCACAF competitions and was named Canada’s Footballer of the Year 14 times.

Even their male colleagues can’t come close to their 190 hits. For comparison: Cristiano Ronaldo (38) has “only” scored 123 times in 203 games for Portugal, while Lionel Messi (36) has scored 106 goals in 178 appearances in the “Albiceleste” jersey.

The striker broke the world record in January 2020, knocking the American Abby Wambach (43, 184 hits) off her throne.

In the end, however, there was no great success. At the World Cup last summer in Australia and New Zealand, the Canadians around Sinlcair, like Germany, were eliminated in the preliminary round.

The 40-year-old wants to continue at club level next year. She is currently under contract with Portland Thorns FC in the US league NWSL.
