Tim Krul’s Decision to Decline World Cup Selection: Insights from Dutch Coach Frans Hoek

According to Frans Hoek, Tim Krul himself declined last year for a place in the Dutch selection at the World Cup in Qatar. The fact that Krul had canceled a penalty test with the Dutch team and could therefore forget to participate is not correct, according to the goalkeeper coach.

Krul was absent prior to the World Cup when the Dutch team started experimenting with penalties. “Tim called me to say he fits in for that,” Louis van Gaal said at the time. When the former national coach was asked whether the goalkeeper still had a chance of winning the World Cup, he was clear. “No. That is the consequence of his decision.”

“Tim himself did not want to come,” Hoek, goalkeeper coach of the Dutch team under Van Gaal, emphasized on Sunday NOS Studio Football. “He then called me and explained what the situation was. He thought a period of four to six weeks without his family was too long.”

“He also had no chance to really play. That would be the other three,” said Hoek. “He would only be there for the penalties. He couldn’t afford that. You have to respect that.”

Krul was a penalty hero for the Dutch team

Krul played a starring role for the Dutch team in a penalty shootout at the 2014 World Cup. Van Gaal brought him in especially for the penalty shootout in the World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica, after which the goalkeeper saved two penalties. The Netherlands therefore reached the semi-finals.

Eight years later, Van Gaal took goalkeepers Andries Noppert, Justin Bijlow and Remko Pasveer to the World Cup in Qatar. Heerenveen goalkeeper Noppert was the first choice at the final tournament and played everything. The Dutch team was eliminated by Argentina in the quarter-finals in the decisive penalty shootout.

If Krul had been in the Dutch selection in Qatar, the goalkeeper would most likely have been brought in for the penalty series against Argentina, according to Hoek. “There’s a good chance that Krul would have been on target,” said Hoek. “In our preliminary information he came out on top.”
