Children and adults hunting for Pokémon

A teacher from Talavera has made the residents of several municipalities hunt Pokémon to improve physical activity. The creator of this project is Ernesto Bautista Santurino Díaz, teacher of the CRA Villas del Tajo (Puente del Arzobispo, Valdeverdeja and Torrico), who explains that the idea arose from the need to cover the WHO recommendations in relation to daily physical activity .

Thus, for children and young people from 5 to 17 years old, physical activity consists of games, sports, trips, recreational activities, physical education or programmed exercises, in the context of family, school or community activities.

Specifically, in order to improve cardiorespiratory and muscular functions and bone health, it is recommended that children and young people between the ages of 5 and 17 spend at least 60 minutes a day in physical activities of moderate to vigorous intensity.

As the teacher explains, daily physical activity should be, for the most part, aerobic. It would be advisable to incorporate, at least three times a week, vigorous activities that strengthen, in particular, the muscles and bones.

In this project, the activity itself consists of carrying out some weekly challenges, both individual and collective, each week a different one after school hours. These challenges have a format very similar to video games so that the students find it attractive and want to carry out the activities, since it is voluntary.

What they have to do is capture the Pokémon that this teacher proposes to them and beat Team Rocket. Something that they have to do through a photograph that they later send to the teacher to their email or phone to confirm that they have achieved it. The contents that are worked on in this project not only contemplate the area of Physical Education but also the area of Natural Sciences.

For development, the collaboration of the parents or relatives of the students is necessary, especially with the little ones, since they will have to use the mobile. In fact, the involvement of students and families has been essential for this project to have been so successful.

Against sedentary lifestyle. This project aims to end the sedentary lifestyle of students and promote healthy habits, which are so beneficial for our body.

The students of Valdeverdeja and Torrico are the great beneficiaries of the project.

In addition, this teacher has developed a Pokémon field notebook to carry out outings to the nearby environment, allowing students to know the area in a different and motivating way, hunting Pokémon. It is an appropriate methodology for students to achieve significant learning, since they see what they have done in the classroom and its practical application.

This idea seemed so ingenious to the Valdeverdeja City Council that it is going to add its Pokémon field notebook to the City Council’s website so that anyone can download it and carry out the proposed activities. It is also a reason for the whole family to take the routes in the area and enjoy the places, as well as attracting people from outside the region to do hiking routes in a different and original way.
