Chiiild, the child prodigy of Montreal who can no longer be ignored

Hope for Sale

Rioux, in his thirties, divides his life between Montreal and Los Angeles. Although his chords resonate with dozens and dozens of commercial successes, from Justin Bieber to Charlotte Cardin to Katy Perry and Celine Dion, he is both disconcerting and inspiring in his humility. We understand that he has his eyes turned to the future, not to the past. He dreams of specializing in studio production and deeply desires to combine pop with more cinematographic music.

It is a successful bet on Hope for Sale, Chiiild’s debut album, released on July 23. Ultra-catchy melodic lines mix with grandiose orchestral flights as well as vaporous, floating textures, all behind the warm and moving voice of his accomplice Ayal (alias xSDTRK). And the groove is never far away: big funky bass awaits us around the corner. This unique amalgam, they baptize it ” synthetic soul “; it was the title of their first microalbum.

From Montreal clubs to Jimmy Kimmel Live!

When Pierre-Luc Rioux sums up his musical journey, we immediately understand how he came to develop this recipe.

electronic dance music] on guitar, on stage. Although David Guetta was not very well known at this time, I play on top of some of his tracks. In 2011, I met by chance in Montreal a close collaborator of David Guetta. I mention to him that if they ever need a guitarist, I’m available. To my surprise, they call me back. And in the midst of this meteoric rise, he specialized in composition of music on picture (for television, cinema or video games) at the Dazmo studio in Montreal.

From the release of Chiiild’s first microalbum, released in 2020, success was evident. The room Pirouette, alone, has more than 9 million plays on Spotify. Moreover, the duo were invited to perform this piece, as well as their new single, Sleepwalking, on the American late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC last June. Just that!

So why is the name of the group not on everyone’s lips in Quebec? playlists Canadian and Montreal artists on listening platforms. Maybe it’s because we haven’t done a lot of television in Quebec yet., explains Rioux. It is true that television still strongly contributes to crystallize the presence of artists in the collective consciousness. It is also true that Chiiild is part of the team of the Avant Garden label, a division of Island Records, whose market mainly targets English-speaking North America. The explanation is therefore quite simple: there was no major French-language advertising campaign targeting the Quebec market in order to introduce the public and the local media to this little local gem.

The corridor

Reached by phone at his Los Angeles apartment, Pierre-Luc Rioux was recovering from the evening of the American launch of Hope for Sale, July 21. Other artists from Montreal were there: the guys from the Planet Giza group. Is there already a strong Montreal – LA connection? Yes, says Pierre-Luc. But the music industry is maybe 100 times or even 1000 times bigger here! There are tons of opportunities. My dream, my goal, is to create a real creative corridor between Montreal and Los Angeles.

And to continue the engineering of this bridge on which he has been working for years, Chiiild will be launching his album on September 22 at L’Astral, in Montreal.
