The CDU wants to elect its new boss at a special party conference on April 25. It should be a one-day meeting. That said the outgoing CDU chairwoman Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer after discussions of the party. The new party leader should also become candidate for chancellor of the CDU. The other applicants have already assured cooperation – even if they are not elected chairman, says Kramp-Karrenbaren.
At first it was still unclear whether – as desired by a large part of the party leadership – it can be avoided that several candidates stand at the special party conference. However, all applicants want to decide this week whether they would actually stand for election, said Kramp-Karrenbauer. Armin Laschet, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Minister of Health Jens Spahn and former Union Group leader Friedrich Merz are considered possible candidates for the party chairmanship. These three had previously left their candidacy open. In contrast, the CDU foreign policy politician Norbert Röttgen announced his candidacy.
