Marion Schmickler becomes the new correspondent and office manager at the ARD television studio in New York, which also includes the Canada reporting area. On August 1, 2022, she will succeed Christiane Meier, who is retiring after 31 years at WDR. Schmickler worked in the USA from 2009 to 2014, at that time as a correspondent in the Washington studio. In Germany, she most recently worked as an editor and reporter for ‘Weltspiegel Digital’.

WDR Editor-in-Chief Ellen Ehni: New York, as the headquarters of the United Nations, is of great importance for our reporting. I am therefore very pleased that Marion Schmickler, a proven USA expert and competent journalist, is taking over the management of the ARD television studio. I wish her every success and every success. My big thanks go to Christiane Meier. With her, a top-notch political journalist and correspondent is retiring. She has done excellent national and international reporting for WDR and ARD for decades and has shown enormous versatility. I wish her all the best for her time after her active working life.’

Marion Schmickler studied English, political science and public law in Bonn and Los Angeles. After completing her traineeship at the Rhein-Zeitung, she first worked there as a news editor before starting her career at WDR in 1996. She was an editor and reporter in the state political editorial department, later in the Tagesschau editorial department. In 2009, Marion Schmickler moved to the ARD studio in Washington DC as a correspondent, where she worked for five years. Her reportage ‘The Torn States of America’, which was created in 2012 in the course of the presidential elections, dates from this period. Together with Stefan Niemann, she received the television prize of the RIAS Berlin Commission. After her return to Germany she worked in the editing department of the political documentary series ‘The Story’. Most recently, Marion Schmickler worked in the program group for current affairs, Europe and abroad in the ‘Weltspiegel-Digital’ editorial team.

Christiane Meier completed her traineeship at NDR and then worked as an editor and presenter at Radio Bremen and WDR. From 2000 to 2007 she was a correspondent in the ARD studio in Washington DC, since 2006 as studio manager. In 2007 she moved to the ARD capital studio in Berlin. There the journalist headed the Berlin team of the ARD morning show from 2012 to 2018 before returning to the USA. There she took over the studio management in New York in July 2018. In 2017, Christiane Meier was awarded the German Television Prize in the category ‘Best Personal Achievement / Presentation’.
