Cervical cancer: the HPV test reimbursed

This reimbursement will therefore allow “all women to benefit from optimal screening, which until now was reserved for those who could afford it,” says the French Society of Colposcopia and Cervico-Vaginal Pathology (SFCPCV).

Why the HPV test?

In July 2019, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) recommended this HPV test to women aged 30 and over. Performed, like the cytological examination (smear) from a sample of cells at the level of the cervix, the HPV test searches for the presence of DNA of the HPV virus at high risk in women, where the cytological examination focuses on cell morphology.

In women over 30, this test can more effectively reduce the number of cases of cervical cancer. Another advantage is that in the event of a negative HPV test, the interval between two screenings may be extended from every 3 years to every 5 years after 30 years.

Note: Each year in France, 3,000 new cases of uterine cancer are diagnosed.
