SILVERSTONE – Dutch driver Max Verstappen from the Red Bull team won the Great British Grand Prix, the tenth race of the MS F1 series. With his sixth triumph in a row and eighth in the season, he confirmed his position as the absolute leader of the championship.

After him, the home Brits Lando Norris in McLaren and Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes came to the finish line. It was Verstappen’s 43rd career victory, but his first at Silverstone.

Even at the tenth event of the year, the winning streak of the Red Bull team, which had a winner in all races of the season so far, did not end – in addition to Verstappen’s eight championships, the other two were won by his teammate Sergio Perez. The Dutchman also won an extra point for the fastest lap at Silverstone.

For Norris, the 2nd place is the best result of the season and he followed up on the 4th place from the last race in Austria. At the same time, he equaled his personal best, which was 2nd place from the Italian WC in 2021.

A fantastic weekend for McLaren

The formula weekend attracted 480,000 spectators to the Silverstone circuit, and a large part of them roared with enthusiasm after the opening meters. Home team Norris, who started from 2nd place, made a good start and got past the winner of qualifying Verstappen.

The successful qualification of the McLaren team was followed by Piastri, who, despite the efforts of Leclerc, maintained 3rd place after the start. Norris led until lap 5, when Verstappen used the DRS system.

On lap 8, Hülkenberg pitted to get a new front wing after contact with Perez. By lap 19, Leclerc was holding on to 4th place ahead of Russell, but headed to the pits for hard compounds and returned to the track in 12th place. At the halfway point of the race, Verstappen was in the lead with a lead of around 5 seconds over McLaren’s Norris and Piastri.

The first to move from the top three was Piastri, who received hard compounds on the 30th lap and was sixth after returning to the track. Russell passed before him, who joined Leclerc in 10th place, but it only took him one lap to get ahead of the Monaco.

Hamilton benefited from the Safety car

On the 33rd lap, Magnussen’s drive unit failed, the Haas car was smoking and there were also smaller flames. Several people used the safety car to change their shoes. After 12 laps, Leclerc returned the hard compounds and switched to medium hard. Hamilton benefited from the presence of the safety car, who after changing his tires got to 3rd place ahead of Piastri. The safety car left the track after six laps.

After the restart, Hamilton’s pursuit of 2nd place attracted the most attention, but Norris made a successful defensive effort. In the 44th lap, Sainz experienced unpleasant moments when he was overtaken by Perez, Albon and also his teammate Leclerc within three corners, and he fell from 7th place to 10th.

Shortly after that, Sainz swapped positions with Gasly twice, but was subsequently stopped by a flat tire and the race was over for him. In the first place, Verstappen held a three-second advantage over Norris, who at the same time maintained a sufficient distance from Hamilton.

The next race of the F1 World Championship season is scheduled for Sunday, July 23 in Hungary.

Max Verstappen, winner: “I had a bad start, we have to look at it. Lando (Norris) was fast, he stuck to me and I couldn’t get rid of him. At the end the soft tires didn’t work anymore, but I’m happy with this win.”

Lando Norris, 2. myest: “It’s absolutely crazy. It was hard work, especially on the hard tires. I tried to hold on to Max as long as possible. I’m second and it’s great. Shame on Oscar (Piastri), we could have had a double podium.”
