Cardiologist told how COVID-19 affects blood vessels and heart

Nisha Parikh, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, spoke about how COVID-19 affects the cardiovascular system of the human body. This was reported on the portal Medicalxpress.

According to the doctor, heart problems have been reported in both young and elderly patients with COVID-19.

Parikh noted that especially the negative effects of COVID-19 on the cardiovascular system appear in the first few weeks of the illness.

“These effects could include new or worsening problems with efficient pumping of blood, inflammation of the heart muscle and the membrane around the heart,” the cardiologist said on Wednesday, November 25.

In addition, patients have Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a cardiac dysfunction that occurs with severe stress. Parikh pointed out that the coronavirus directly affects the lining of blood vessels, known as the endothelium. This can increase the risk of blood clots in the lungs or lower extremities.

“It appears that the virus directly infects the lining of blood vessels known as the endothelium, which can cause high blood clots, such as in the lungs and legs, among patients hospitalized with COVID-19,” Parikh said.

Newspaper Notifications writes that the cardiologist also said that many patients complain of cardiovascular symptoms, but some symptoms are associated with the nervous system.

“Many of the symptoms seem to be related to the nervous system and may have many similarities to cardiovascular diseases that we already knew about, such as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome,” she added.
