Iker Casillas has a rigorous solution in mind to solve the corona crisis in the football world. The candidate-chairman of the Spanish federation RFEF proposes that the seasons will now coincide with the calendar years.
“How do we find a solution for European football? Let’s stop the competitions in a calendar year,” former goalkeeper Casillas wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
“If everything returns to normal in three or four months, we can finish the current season before December. Then we’ll start the new season, which covers a calendar year.”
Casillas sees a big advantage of his plan. “The next World Cup will start in November 2022 in Qatar. That would fit in nicely with the end of the season with the new football calendar.”
“Then what happens to the players’ contracts?”
Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, sees many bottlenecks in the idea of Casillas, he reports on Twitter“A new date has already been set by UEFA,” he pointed to the deadline in early August.
“If we delayed the start of the competition for half a year, I suppose we will miss out on a full season of television revenue. And what will happen to the players’ contracts, which will all expire in the summer?”
In February, 38-year-old Casillas announced his candidacy to chair RFEF. His only counter-candidate is the current president Luis Rubiales (42). The election would take place no earlier than the end of May, but due to the corona crisis, no date has yet been set.
