CABEI Grants Honduran Government $800+ Million for Infrastructure and Agroindustry

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) granted the Honduran government three loans exceeding 800 million dollars for road infrastructure, hospital networks and credit for agroindustry and rural savings banks.

With this financing, the parties plan to benefit more than 3.2 million Hondurans and 88 thousand families, the bank said in a statement last Friday.

The first loan corresponds to the “Support Program for the Hospital Network of the Republic of Honduras (PARH)”, approved by CABEI on September 5, 2023 for US$135 million. It includes the design, construction, equipment and start-up of two new hospital centers in the municipalities of Choluteca and Tocoa, in the south and northeast of the country, respectively. Medical specialties will be expanded according to the situation of each area and the number of hospital beds.

A second loan is directed to the “Credit Program for Agroindustry and Rural Banks in the Republic of Honduras”, approved by CABEI on November 16, 2023, aimed at strengthening the productive and associative skills of micro, small and medium producers, and entrepreneurs integrated into rural banks, as well as access to credit on favorable conditions to increase food security and the development of the country’s agricultural and agroindustrial sector. The amount is US$100 million, of which US$25 million corresponds to a new loan that is signed today and US$75 million comes from the reorientation of an existing loan.

The third financing will be invested in the “Honduras Resilient Highways Program (PCR-HN)”, approved by CABEI on December 5, 2023, for US$606.9 million destined for the rehabilitation, improvement, and expansion of 308.0 kilometers in the Danlí-Trojes and Ojo de Agua-Cantarranas highways in the east of the country; and in the northern area the Honduras Tourism Corridor, which includes the road sections from La Barca – El Progreso to Tela and La Ceiba. The design of the bypass of the city of El Progreso, the studies and designs for the Santa Rosa de Copán – Cucuyagua and the Chamelecón – Naco highways.

The three operations are aligned with CABEI’s 2020-2024 Institutional Strategy, in the Strategic Axes of Sustainable Competitiveness and Human Development, as well as with the Honduras Country Strategy 2022-2026 in its Pillars No. 1 “Modernize and enhance infrastructure sustainable productive” and No. 3 “Promote sustainable competitiveness”, focused on improving connectivity and logistics performance; and its Strategic Objective of Improving Coverage, Quality and Access to Public Health Services.
