About 300 people had gathered on Friday at around 7.30 p.m. along a main traffic axis in a neighborhood in Malmö that was predominantly inhabited by migrants. This after reports that members of a right-wing extremist party had previously staged the burning of a Koran, the holy book of Islam.

“Allahu akbar” calls and street battles
The angry crowd grew rapidly. Soon fires were set along the road and several cars were set on fire. Police spokesman Rickard Lindqvist spoke to a local news channel about “persistent and violent unrest over which we have no control.”

Arabic shouts of “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”) could also be heard while tires and other debris burned and thick columns of black smoke rose above Malmö into the night sky. According to reports, an underground car park about a kilometer away from the street battles also burned down.

Right-wing extremists arrested the same day
