A brown bear has injured five people in Slovakia. The wild bear ran straight through the town of Liptovsky Mikulas, in the north of the country.

The city government said that two men, two women and a 10-year-old child were injured when they were attacked by the bear. They suffered bite wounds and scratches.

The bear probably crossed the Vah River and then got lost in the residential areas of the city. He was also seen near a shopping center. Images on social media show the bear runs across the street and attacks a man.

Bear intervention teams

A police patrol chased the bear back into the forest. The city council wants the bear to be shot because the animal poses a threat. To this end, special bear intervention teams searched for the bear using a drone with thermal images.

In the same area last week, a 31-year-old woman fell down a slope while fleeing a bear. She didn’t survive.

There are 1100 to 1200 wild bears in Slovakia; most live in the Tatra Mountains, where Liptovsky Mikulas is located next to.
