A 21-year-old Briton has been jailed for nine years for planning to kill Queen Elizabeth on Christmas Day 2021. Jaswant Singh Chail has also been sentenced by the court in London to long-term treatment in a psychiatric hospital.

The man entered the grounds of Windsor Castle almost two years ago, where Queen Elizabeth gave her Christmas speech later in the day. Jaswant Singh Chail climbed over a wall with a rope ladder and was only spotted by security guards after two hours, after which he was arrested. He was dressed as a Star Wars villain and carrying a loaded crossbow.

Revenge

In a pre-recorded video message, he said he wanted to avenge those killed in the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre when the colonial British army opened fire on unarmed men, women and children in a park in the Indian city of Amritsar. In the same video, Chail said he wanted to stand up “for everyone who has been murdered, humiliated and discriminated against because of their race.”

Chail was fascinated by the Sith Lords from Star Wars and discussed his plans with an AI chatbot, which he considered his girlfriend. The police found thousands of messages on his computer. For example, he described himself as “a pathetic Sikh Sith Lord who wants to die”.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8 last year at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She was 96 years old.
