Britain on Monday called Ken McCallum the new head of counterintelligence (MI5). Mr. McCallum was responsible for the investigation of the Skripals from this service.
Ken McCallum worked at MI5 for 25 years. He climbed the career ladder, working in all major sectors – from Northern Ireland to fighting the Islamic militants and ensuring the security of the 2012 London Olympics.
After the former GRU colonel Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia were found poisoned with a nerve agent known as the Novice, in 2018, Mr. McCallum represented counterintelligence during the investigation. “I have dedicated my working life to this team, and now it is a great honor for me to be invited to lead it,” said Ken McCallum (quoted by Reuters).
The creaks were poisoned in Salisbury in March. Both were hospitalized and soon recovered. The British authorities are convinced that Russian intelligence was involved in the incident. Moscow denies any involvement.
