HUAWEI FreeLace Pro 2 Headphones: Unusual Design, Exceptional Sound, and Long Battery Life

Hello.

There are very few companies that try to create the widest range of headphones to give the customer a choice of different form factors that will suit literally every taste and ear. In the line from HUAWEI we see the dominance of TWS earphones; models such as FreeBuds Pro, or FreeClip headphones are very unusual, fashionable, made in the style of ear loops.

As the name suggests, the FreeLace Pro 2 is a headphone that you wear around your neck, like a rubber cord that you pull over your head. This design of the mobile phones allows you to put the control panel on a cord, add another microphone, and add a large battery that supports up to 25 hours of work on a single charge.

The relative freedom in the arrangement of electronics in headphones allows one to achieve a lot; engineers can test sound and other features, offering a different interpretation than in TWS models. And this is where the line of headphones from HUAWEI differs in a beneficial way; not only there are several form factors, but also a different definition of sound, where everyone can choose a model that suits their preferences.

Let’s take a look at the technical features of the headphones and a short list of the main points:

  • Bluetooth version 5.3, simultaneous support for two connections (read: devices);
  • HUAWEI HiPair – fast synchronization with HUAWEI devices;
  • SBC, AAC, L2HC, LDAC;
  • Hi-Res Audio;
  • Dual dynamic magnetic drive, 10.8 mm;
  • Frequency from 15 Hz to 40 kHz;
  • Equalization, up to ten presets, automatic adjustment of sound and volume levels;
  • ANC 2.0, active noise cancellation, three settings, applied automatically;
  • AI noise reduction during a call;
  • Touch control of noise reduction modes on the left ear;
  • Wired control panel with control keys;
  • Two microphones on each earbud (four in total) plus a MEMS microphone on the wire;
  • USB Type C connection on the wire;
  • Li-Pol 150 mAh battery;
  • Total charging time is up to 60 minutes, in 5 minutes you get up to 5 hours of work;
  • Operating time (with priority on sound quality) – up to 10/15 hours with and without noise reduction;
  • Operating time (prioritizing connection quality) – up to 12.5/25 hours with and without noise reduction;
  • Call time – up to 9 / 10.5 hours with and without noise reduction;
  • Headset weight – 34.5 grams, cord length – 875 mm;
  • Headset color: green, blue, black.

The headset is in a small box. Inside, in addition to the headphones themselves, you will find silicone earbuds in the color of the case; the size is set to M, but you can choose larger or smaller earbuds. It’s worth choosing earbuds that fit your ear so that wearing the headset is comfortable and doesn’t get in the way.

The cord is wide and soft without shaking, and there are aluminum inserts on the sides that balance the headset when you wear it.

The headphones themselves have magnets, so they can be “snapped” in place when closed, the headset fits you easily.

The ergonomics of the headset will seem unusual to many, but with the weight of 34.5 grams, it does not put any pressure on your neck after five minutes you will stop to see it. In the morning I left the house with a headset and did not take it off until the evening. There are no negative effects, but the main thing is that even with sudden movements of your head, when you bend over, the wire does not move or slide. The headset fits your neck like a glove.

The headset is available in three colors – light green, blue and black.

The fit of the headset means you’ll be wearing it all day, and it’s important to understand which color you choose. Black looks as neutral as possible and fits perfectly with any outfit. The light green color is bright and catches the eye. And here you have to think carefully about what is right for you. It’s not difficult to hide headphones in your pocket, but very few people do it.

I love unusual designs, this is exactly what I have here. The control unit with keys has a USB Type C connection, you just remove the connector and you can connect the headphones to your phone immediately to charge them. This is the easiest way; any phone allows you to charge the headphones, and the battery charge on the phone is not really wasted (battery capacity is 150 mAh). When you connect to a HUAWEI smartphone for the first time, HiPair technology will work, which will automatically connect the headphones to the phone, you can configure them, watch training videos on how to keep control the headphones. Everything happens quickly and easily.

I like the runtime of the headphones because it is very, very long. Using noise reduction, you get up to 9 hours of talk time, up to 12.5 hours of listening to music (HD codecs). If noise reduction is not required, the listening time increases significantly.

The position of the earphones is tight, they have a stop, which allows them to stay in your ears and not fly out even when they run. It is the sports part that will interest many in this model.

The passive noise reduction in these headphones is very good, it cuts you off from the outside world, sounds are heard as if through a membrane. You can hear loud noises like cars, but the small noise of a big city is reliably blocked. And so, you might not see the start of ANC 2.0 noise reduction as a clear transition from noise to silence. But the beauty of noise reduction in this model is that it is implemented flexibly, it adapts to external noise, and this setting is automatic, it works well. I noticed that as soon as I enter the subway from the street, the headphones “listen” to the sound of the cars, then a more aggressive noise reduction mode is activated, which picture will sound better. And not only at the highest level, headphones have a reserve in this aspect; here the noise reduction does not turn the volume up to maximum levels, which is good for your hearing.

In conversations, noise reduction uses AI algorithms, the sound of the voice is cleaned, but it does not become artificial to your interlocutor, there is no metal or speech synthesis. So the sound is good, but outside noise is cut out in almost any situation. The presence of a fifth microphone in addition to the control unit is a big plus; it is this design that allows you to qualitatively analyze external noise and cut it off. In standard TWS earphones, the placement of the microphones is restricted to implementing noise reduction; they are close to your ears and cannot be separated in space. There is no such limitation here.

Sound is an individual thing, and any headphones need to be listened to. Listing what drivers there are and what size they are doesn’t give the slightest idea of the sound. This is the first contact with these headphones for me: soft. They are tuned to a soft sound, including the bass, there is no harshness here. The sound is enveloping, it’s pleasant, and it’s good to listen to popular, electronic, dance, classical music. But writing rock with the default settings doesn’t sound enough, here you have to choose another equalizer (with a dozen of them, and you can also customize them for yourself).

The most universal sound basically, and then find how you listen to music, what you want. I would say these headphones are excellent for city streets; they sound close to the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 3, although the sound is still different. Sounds good, but let me remind you again, you should find headphones and listen to them yourself, this is the best decision. We all hear differently, and you should not rely on someone’s personal opinion in this matter.

The following codecs are supported: SBC, AAC, L2HC (HUAWEI proprietary HD codec), LDAC. In the settings, you can set connection priority (then SBC, AAC codecs are selected) or audio priority (HD codecs are selected).

The control panel on the cord is very simple, with a touch you can control music rewind, playback, there is a slide key that turns off the headphones (it’s almost impossible to accidental pressing).

The price of HUAWEI FreeLace Pro 2 headphones is 6999 rubles, which seems like an adequate offer in terms of price / quality ratio. This is an extension of the model range from HUAWEI; the headphones will be interesting for those who do not like to wear TWS headphones regularly (here you can wear them alone and use them only at the right times). No extra boxes, just headphones around your neck. They are also interesting for those who play sports; the headphones are completely secure and won’t slip due to sudden movements. Unusual design, good sound, long operation on one charge and the ability to recharge the headphones from your smartphone at any time. An interesting model, although not the most popular one due to its form factor.
